Skipped Back 10

October 27th, 2008

A few modly/discussion-y type things:

To put the success of this project in perspective for you all, I went through and counted all of the fics posted at bsg_slash from the beginning of Oct. 2007 to the end of Sept. 2008. There were roughly 27 m/m fics posted to the community in that time. I say "roughly" because I didn't count separate parts of multi-part fics. (Rather counted them as one.) I also know that bsg_slash isn't the only community where m/m bsg fic is posted. For example, some may post to bsg2003fics, or another community, and not crosspost to bsg_slash. However, given that, I feel this is a good measuring point. In three weeks we produced 49 fics. I can't begin to tell you guys how amazing that is. But I think the numbers stand for themselves.

cynthia_arrow and myself started this community back in January in the hopes of drumming up interest, reaching out to the slash fans in this fandom, and inspiring them to write and create and share with each other by hosting events that would encourage just that. I don't want to sound too self-contratulatory, but I think we've done a pretty good job at meeting that goal. And all of you, our members, have helped to make this whole experiment a success. I could not be any prouder.

That said, I want to hear from you guys. What are we doing right? What are we doing wrong? Do you have any suggestions for future events? What about non-fic events like meta and discussion? (Which you are free to post here anytime you like, fyi!) What aren't you seeing that you would like to see? What would make you more likely to participate in the future? Tell me what you're thinking because I want every event to be as successful and fun as this past one and for that we need your input!

One specific question I have is: Are you interested in an end-of-the-year or new year's event of some kind? If so, ideas? Fic exchange? Etc?

This probably goes without saying, but for any of you who have concerns... we're releasing the prompts into the wild. If one or several of the prompts from the ficathon inspired you or gave you a plot bunny or planted the seed of something huge in your brain and you weren't able to get to it this round? Please, by all means, run with it. Don't think that because the event here is over that you have to put a lid on those ideas. It's all about inspiration here. So run wild! Post it at your journal or bsg_slash weeks from now or months from now, it doesn't matter how long it takes. There are tons of excellent prompts and to see them go unused would be a tragedy of epic proportions. You might even wanna print out that list out and keep it around for a rainy day, you never know when inspiration will strike!

Final Count: 49 fics!

Thanks so much for all who participated--by writing, reading, or simply cheerleading! I hope we can do something like this again sometime. :)

October 19th, 2008

OMG, you guys. In two weeks, we've produced

40 ficlets!

There's been a wonderful turn-out so far, and we couldn't be happier, but I know there are more ficlets out there ready and waiting to be written.

Maybe you're like me and you've had no luck making words work for you recently. Maybe you're hesitant about posting your work (don't be--we're a friendly bunch, I swear!). Or maybe you just haven't had the time the last couple of weeks. On the other hand, maybe you've already posted something and would like to write more. Whatever the case, you've got a second chance to jump right in and join us: we've decided to extend the ficathon another week, to Saturday, October 25.

We've got forty ficlets so far. I wonder how many more we can add to this list before then!

October 18th, 2008

Hello all you writers and readers!

You have all done such a great job so far with the comment ficathon. So great, in fact, that I'm going to be nice and give everyone another week to play with these wonderful prompts.

You'll have until, Saturday, October 25th, 2008!

Make me proud, kiddos!!

October 11th, 2008

Hello everybody, this is your mid-event round-up and reminder!

We're half-way through and I am so overwhelmed and pleased with the turn-out so far. How many amazing fics have been written so far for our first-ever comment ficathon? Twenty-three, that's how many!

Holy mac & cheese, that's outstanding!

We have until next Saturday (October 18th) to write, write write. (Did you know you can write for your own prompts if you like? Yup!) And I'm sure that those of us who have written would love any and all feedback we get, so take a peek behind the cut where I've listed everything that's been written so far. When you're done over there, head back on over to the prompts and put that muse to work.

(And just a quick reminder that anyone, even non-members, can participate, and if you want to post your fic anonymously, you're more than welcome to.)

Welcome to our first ever Comment Ficathon!

We're blown away by the participation so far, all the fantastic and diverse prompts we received last week. Now it's time to see how much fic we can generate—and how much fun we can have writing and reading!

• WHAT? Pick a pairing and one of the prompts listed for it, and then write a comment fic.
• HOW MANY? You can do any many as you want; the more, the better!
• WHO? This comment ficathon is open to anyone, whether you're a member of this comm or not. Anonymous posting is also allowed.
• WHEN? Posting will be open from now through Saturday, October 18.
• HOW? Please read and follow the guidelines below before you begin sharing your comment fic.

and now, the prompts…Collapse )

September 28th, 2008

As we mentioned the other day, in a week's time we'll be starting a two week comment ficathon (October 5-18).

Our main goal is to find a way for us to collectively spark our creativity and have fun writing BSG slash again. We're doing this along the lines of the Porn Battle, except we're not limiting ourselves to porn. We'd like to see how many people we can get to participate—and how much slashy goodness we can generate—but before anybody can get writing, we need you to…

Look for guidelines for writing and posting fic when the ficathon gets underway, but this week, we're just looking for simple prompts: pairing + one word. Anybody can leave prompts, regardless of whether you're a member of the comm.

1. Submission format: pairing, word. Example: Felix/Gaius, white.

2. Submit as many as you like—for several different pairings and/or multiple prompts for the same pairing, if you want. The more possibilities, the merrier. :)

3. Please remember we're a community for m/m slash. Hey, we love het and f/f slash (and gen, too!), but those genres already have challenge communities devoted to them. Boyslash did not, which is why we created this comm. But note: threesomes involving women are welcome…so long as it's a slashy threesome (for instance Leoben/Sam/Kara, rather than Leoben/Kara/Sam).

4. Also welcome: real person fiction and crossovers. If writing about characters outside the BSG fandom, please include the crossover fandom name in the prompt submission. Example: Helo/Ron Weasley (Harry Potter), trip.

5. Prompting closes Saturday, October 4, so you have all week to scheme and plan...and submit!

September 25th, 2008

It's been pretty quiet around the world of BSG slash lately, and that certainly needs to change, no? But if you're like me and crickets, you might need a bit of inspiration, a way to jump-start your muse. So...

It's time for a mini fic explosion! Prompts will be collected September 28 - October 4 and posted soon after, with the two weeks after that to get your writing in.

Two weeks?! Yep. Think oxoniensis's infamous Porn Battle: quick and dirty. Or, you know, not so dirty, lol. We're down with the PG, too. :)

We'll make the official post with all the hairy details on Sunday, but for now, we just want you to

1. Do some thinking about awesome one word prompts for your favorite pairings
2. Get excited about churning out some comment fic (or longer, if the muse inspires you!)
3. Give your slash-minded BSG friends a good poke and tell them to come and join us

(no subject)

STOCK. jars of life;
I just wanted to let you guys know that the Porn Battle has started and there are a ton of really great slashy bsg prompts there!

On an unrelated note, I know that I mentioned to some of you about the possibility of an event being held here sometime this summer, but with so many fic-writing events going on so close together and many overlapping, I have decided to just wait until things are less busy in fic-land on LJ. I fear some people may be getting burned out. (Which may or may not include myself!)

I've been kicking this idea around for weeks.

How many of these work, and how?Collapse )
